CALGARY, ALBERTA - Hockey Canada and the Canadian Hockey League named Dean Chynoweth (Seattle, WHL), the
head coach of Canada's World Championship Under-18 Team for the upcoming 2004 IIHF World Under-18 Hockey
Championship, taking place this spring from April 8-18, 2004 in Minsk, Belarus. Canada enters the 2004 World
Under-18 Championship as defending World Champions, having captured last year's World Championship event in
April, 2003.
"Dean Chynoweth has shown through his involvement over the past two years with Hockey Canada's Program of
Excellence, a passion and a knowledge of international hockey that will be valuable for Canada at the 2004
World Under-18 Championship this spring," said Johnny Misley, Vice president, Hockey, with Hockey Canada.
Chynoweth, 35, an NCCP Intermediate certified coach, has just come off a silver medal as an assistant
coach of Canada's National Junior Team at the 2004 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship. Chynoweth also won
a gold medal (2002) at the 2002 Eight Nations Cup, as an assistant coach with Canada's National Under-18
Summer Team.
A former NHLer with the New York Islanders and Boston Bruins, Chynoweth has been the head coach of the
WHL's Seattle Thunderbirds for the past four seasons.
" It is quite an honour for me to represent Canada at the World Under-18 Championship," said Chynoweth.
"This will be a tremendous opportunity for these players to gain experience against the best players of their
age group in the World, an experience that should serve them and Canada well in the future with the National
Junior Team."
Hockey Canada also announced the assistant coaches and the members of the support staff. Chynoweth will be
joined behind the bench by assistant coaches James Boyd (Belleville Bulls, OHL) and Clément Jodoin.
Boyd, 27, will be making his international hockey debut with Canada's World Championship Under-18 Team.
Boyd has just completed his first season as head coach of the OHL's Belleville Bulls.
Jodoin, 51, was an assistant coach with the NHL's Montreal Canadiens and is currently an associate member
with the Quebec Midget AAA Hockey League, assisting in player development. Just this past November, Jodoin
was an assistant coach under Dave King with Canada's National Men's Team at the 2003 Deutschland Cup.
Canada's National Under-18 Program consists of two separate teams, assembled twice a year. The National
Under-18 Summer Program and the National Under-18 World Championship Team which Chynoweth will coach this in
April.
Hockey Canada also announced the members of the support staff, as follows:
- Video Coach: Mark French (Wilfrid Laurier University, CIS)
- Equipment Manager: Tyler Broderson (Lethbridge Hurricanes, WHL)
- Therapist: Doug Stacey (Hamilton, ON)
- Team Doctor: Dr. Rizqi Ibrahim (Swift Current Broncos, WHL)
Canada's 2004 World Championship Under-18 Team will be comprised of players under 18 years old (born in
1986 or later) whose teams are not playing in either the CHL, Junior A or collegiate playoffs.
