SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – After a week competition at the 2003 Air Canada Cup National Midget Hockey
Championship, the Gold medal game will oppose the Collège Antoine-Girouard Gaulois and the Calgary Northstars
at 12:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) on Sunday at the Sault Ste. Marie Memorial Gardens.
The Championship game will be broadcast live across Canada by The Sports Network (TSN) and Réseau des
Sports (RDS) at 12:00 p.m. (Eastern Time).
In one semi-final, Collège Antoine-Girouard (QC) and the St. John’s Maple Leafs (ATL) gave the fans a game
to remember. St. John’s took a 2-0 lead into the third on goals by David Lewis and Scott Brophy. The only
undefeated team during the round robin, Collège Antoine-Girouard, was in danger of suffering its first loss.
But Alexandre Imbeault scored twice in the third to put the Gaulois back on equal terms. The night before,
the young winger was honoured as the Top Forward at the Championship.
For the rest of the third and part of the overtime period, both teams had great chances but both
goaltenders, Doug Jewer (ATL) and Loïc Lacasse (QC) excelled. At 4:32, Robin Beauchemin stole the puck in the
offensive zone and beat Jewer with a hard, precise shot, sending College Antoine-Girouard into the final.
In Saturday’s second semi-final game, Calgary got the best of the Yorkton Harvest in a tight-checking
affair. Jay Beagle scored at 0:52 of the second period to give the Northstars a 2-1 lead. The lead proved to
be enough. Yorkton pressed in the third, highlighted by a shift in which they hit the post three times.
Calgary goaltender Troy Bisson stopped all 10 shots that he faced in the period to give Calgary a spot in the
final.
The St. John’s Maple Leafs (ATL) will face Yorkton (WEST) in the Bronze medal game at 8:30 a.m. (Eastern
Time) at the Sault Ste. Marie Memorial Gardens.
