PRINCE GEORGE – In just one year from today, Prince George will be hosting the nation at one of Canada’s most prestigious hockey championships. The 2007 RBC Royal Bank Cup runs May 5-13 and with one year to go, organizers are confident that the Prince George championship will be the best ever in the event’s history.
Host Committee Co-Chair Dan Rogers says he is extremely pleased with the progress the host committee is making in planning for the National Junior A Hockey Championship. “We have a great team in place that has been working very hard to ensure the 2007 RBC Royal Bank Cup in Prince George will be a huge success on all fronts,” says Rogers.
Rogers and Phil Beaulieu, VP of Marketing, leave today for Ontario, where they will attend the 2006 RBC Royal Bank Cup, in Streetsville. While there, they will take in the event, gather information and ideas, as well as promote the 2007 Championship in Prince George. (Local committee members also attended the RBC Royal Bank Cup in Grande Prairie in 2004, in preparation for the Prince George bid package.)
Some of the key activities and successes of the host committee to date include:
Securing James Western Star Sterling as a gold level sponsor. Similar sponsorships are expected to be announced with the next month.
Close to 50% of the tickets available for individual sale have been spoken for. (A number of tickets for the event are reserved for Hockey Canada, the participating teams and major event sponsors). Tickets are available online at Ticketmaster.ca or charge by phone to 614-9100.
Establishing volunteer committees to look after each area involved in hosting the 2007 RBC Royal Bank Cup. Committees include Operations, Marketing, Special Events, and Business . Host Committee Co-Chair Don Kehler says there is still a lot of work ahead for the host committee. “An event like this takes an extraordinary amount of work and commitment, but the rewards coming back to this community from hosting a successful event will be immeasurable.”
The 2007 RBC Royal Bank Cup National Junior A Hockey Championship will take place May 5-13, 2007 in Prince George. The 2007 RBC Royal Bank Cup will feature five teams from the various geographic regions of Canada, and the host team—the Prince George Spruce Kings—as they compete in a 13-game round-robin tournament to determine the Champion of Canadian Junior A hockey. The event will include a number of other festivities to celebrate the fans, families and the community of Prince George, including: the Castle Cabaret, an ongoing fan festival, a tailgate party and a golf tournament.
It is expected to draw hockey fans from across the country, with the final game televised live on TSN. The impact of this event for the local economy is estimated to be close to $1 million.
