THEN: A Midget scoring star at Notre Dame, where he racked up 111 points (39G, 72A) in just 44 games, a 16-year-old Schwartz was named to the Canada West roster, along with his older brother Rylan, for the 2008 World Junior A Challenge in Camrose, Alta. After recording one assist in a tournament-opening upset shootout loss to Belarus, Schwartz was in on three of the Canadians’ five power-play goals in a win over Russia that clinched a semifinal berth. Despite going without a point in the playoff round as Canada West finished with a silver medal, Schwartz’s two-way play earned him a berth on the tournament all-star team – he remains the only forward ever named an all-star despite not scoring a goal.

NOW: Schwartz finished his lone season of Canadian Junior A hockey by being named SJHL Rookie of the Year after scoring 76 points (34G, 42A) in 46 games with Notre Dame. He joined Tri-City of the USHL in 2009-10, leading the league in scoring, and was selected 14th overall by St. Louis in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. After helping Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team win Memorial of Ivan Hlinka gold in 2009, Schwartz was back in the red and white of Team Canada at the 2011 World Junior Championship in Buffalo, N.Y., helping Canada to a silver medal. He returned to Canada’s National Junior Team last year in Calgary and Edmonton, wearing the ‘C’ as captain and winning a bronze medal. Schwartz left Colorado College following his sophomore season, during which he was named an NCAA All-American, and immediately joined the Blues, scoring his first NHL goal on his first shot against Tampa Bay on March 17.
