Canada's National Men's Team Advances to Championship Game at 2012 Spengler Cup

DAVOS, Switzerland – Canada’s National Men’s Team has advanced to the championship game at the 2012 Spengler Cup following a 5-1 semifinal victory over HC Fribourg-Gottéron (Switzerland) on Sunday. Canada will face tournament host HC Davos (Switzerland) in the championship game on Monday, Dec. 31, beginning at 6 a.m. ET/3 a.m. PT, live on TSN (check your local listings).

In Sunday’s semifinal, Canada got two goals and an assist from Matt Duchene (Haliburton, Ont./HC Ambri-Piotta, SUI) and a goal and a helper from Carlo Colaiacovo (Toronto, Ont./Detroit, NHL) to advance to the final. Jason Spezza (Toronto, Ont./Rapperswil-Jona, SUI) and Marc-Antoine Pouliot (Quebec City, Que./EHC Biel, SUI) also scored for the Canadians, who got 25 saves from Devan Dubnyk (Calgary, Alta./Edmonton, NHL).

Canada finished first in the Cattini Group in the preliminary round, which included a 5-0 win over HC Davos and a 2-1 overtime loss to Adler Mannheim (Germany), earning it a bye into the semifinals.

Canada’s National Men’s Team roster for the 2012 Spengler Cup is comprised of Canadian players currently playing in Europe, as well as players available due to the NHL lockout.

In Sunday’s other semifinal, HC Davos beat HC Vitkovice Steel (Czech Republic) 5-4.

Including Monday’s game, Canada has now appeared in 10 of the last 13 championship games, winning the Spengler Cup in 2002, 20. Overall, Canada’s National Men’s Team has won the Spengler Cup 11 times (1984, 1986, 1987, 1992, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2002, 2003, 2007) since first taking part in the tournament in 1984.

The Spengler Cup, held annually since 1923, is the oldest professional international hockey tournament in the world.
