The Moncton Rockets have won the New Brunswick female Midget AAA championship, defeating the Northern Stars 5-2 on Feb. 12 to win the provincial championship series three games to one.
The Rockets and Stars split a pair of weekend games, with Northern staying alive Saturday night with a 3-2 victory before Moncton wrapped up the series Sunday. The Rockets won the opening two games of the series the previous weekend, 3-2 and 4-1.
Both teams will advance to the Atlantic Region championship at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre in Bathurst, N.B., from March 29 to April 1 - the Rockets as New Brunswick representatives and the Stars as tournament hosts.
“We were super excited to win,” said Moncton’s Amy Sweet following the series clincher. “We did great. We lost in the provincial final last year and didn’t want that to happen again. This was the last chance for many of us to win the provincials again so we wanted to make sure it happened.”
The Rockets were also provincial champions in 2010, when they won the Atlantic title and advanced to the Esso Cup, Canada’s National Female Midget Championship, in Regina, Sask.
Moncton opened the series Feb. 4 with a tight 3-2 win, thanks to two goals from Schyler Campbell, and put the Stars on the verge of elimination with a 4-1 victory the following day.
But Northern earned its first win in Game 3, erasing a 2-0 first-period deficit and scoring the victory thanks to third-period goals from Jennifer Bell and Shania Carrier.
The Stars threatened to force a fifth and deciding game, with Game 4 tied 2-2 heading into the third period, but Taylor Dale, Catherine Richard and Sarah Bujold all scored in the final 20 minutes to help Moncton to the 5-2 win and the series victory.
