CALGARY, Alta. – Canada’s National Sledge Team will welcome three international entries – Japan, Norway and the United States – to Calgary next week for the 2011 World Sledge Hockey Challenge, Nov. 27 to Dec. 3., as the top four sledge hockey nations in the world go for gold at the WinSport Canada Athletic & Ice Complex.

Canada, which won the gold medal at the last World Sledge Hockey Challenge in London, Ont., in April, is looking for its fourth gold at the event, having also won in 2007 in Kelowna, B.C., and 2008 in Charlottetown, P.E.I. It took home the silver medal from the 2009 tournament in Charlottetown.

Canada will open the 2011 World Sledge Hockey Challenge against Japan at 12 p.m. MT on Sunday, Nov. 27., followed by Norway facing off against the United States at 4 p.m. MT.

Single-game tickets for the six preliminary round games and both semifinals are available for just $10, while the bronze and gold medal games are $12.

In addition, a seven-game Team Canada package is available for just $45, including all three of Canada’s preliminary round games, both semifinals, the bronze medal game and gold medal game.

The 2011 World Sledge Hockey Challenge is the first international event to be held at the WinSport Canada Athletic & Ice Complex, the new home of Hockey Canada.

“We’re very excited to be the first national team to take the ice at Hockey Canada’s new home,” said Mike Mondin, head coach of Canada’s National Sledge Team. “It is always a thrill to play on home ice in front of Canadian fans, and we’re looking forward to defending our gold medal in Calgary.”

All games at the 2011 World Sledge Hockey Challenge, except for the gold medal game, will be available at hockeycanada.fasthockey.com. Individual games are available for purchase, but fans also have the chance to buy multiple credits at once, which offers the best value.

The gold medal game, which will be held Saturday, Dec. 3 at 4 p.m. MT, will be shown on TSN2 and RDS, the official broadcasters of Hockey Canada. Check local listings for broadcast times in your area.

NOTE TO MEDIA: Francis Dupont, Hockey Canada’s manager of media relations, will be on site with Canada’s National Sledge Team in Calgary. He can be reached at fdupont@hockeycanada.ca or 403-777-4564 for interview requests.
