CANADA TO FACE SWEDEN ON JANUARY 5TH
PARDUBICE, CZECH REPUBLIC – Canada’s National Junior Team has advanced to the gold medal game at the 2008 IIHF World Junior Championship, Hockey Canada and the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) announced on Friday. Canada will now face Sweden on January 5th in the gold medal game. The game will be played at 2 p.m. ET (8 p.m. local) and broadcast live on TSN, TSN.ca, RDS, RDS.ca and The Fan Radio Network. Russia and USA will play for the bronze medal at 10 a.m. ET (4 p.m. local).
Canada reached the gold medal of the 2008 IIHF World Junior Championship by winning its semi-final game against USA 4-1.
Colton Gillies (Surrey, BC/Saskatoon, WHL) and Brad Marchand (Hammonds Plains, NS/Halifax, QMJHL) scored 20 seconds apart early in the third period to break open a 2-0 game and help the Canadians to their seventh consecutive gold medal game appearance at the IIHF World Junior Championship.
Shawn Matthias (Mississauga, ON/Belleville, OHL) and captain Karl Alzner (Burnaby, BC/Calgary, WHL) also scored for Canada, while goaltender Steve Mason (Oakville, ON/Kitchener, OHL) made 33 saves.
TSN, TSN HD and TSN.ca, as well as RDS, RDS HD and RDS .ca, continue to provide live coverage of the 2008 IIHF World Junior Championship, airing both medal games on January 5th from the Czech Republic. Coverage this year features 11 games, including all Team Canada games and the medal round games. Following each Team Canada game, TSN.ca will stream a live post-game show. All games will also be available on-demand on TSN.ca throughout the duration of the tournament.
All of Team Canada’s games will also be broadcast LIVE on The FAN Radio Network (check local listings).
Canada has medaled in nine straight IIHF World Junior Championships, including gold medal performances in 2005, 20, silver medals in 1999, 2002, 20 and bronze medals in 20.
The 2009 IIHF World Junior Championship will be played in Ottawa, ON, marking the eighth time that Canada has hosted this event.

Hockey Canada’s manager of communications, André Brin, will be on-site with the team through the end of the 2008 IIHF World Junior Championship to assist with media requests. Media interviews on-site will follow immediately after the game.
Please take note that the team is departing the evening of Saturday, January 5th, but we will do our best to accommodate phone interviews in the hours following the conclusion of the game. Priority in all cases will be given to media requests on-site and we will NOT be able to confirm any live post-game phone interviews in advance.
