CALGARY, ALBERTA – Team Canada Executive Director Wayne Gretzky, along with Team Canada’s management and coaching staff, announced on Wednesday that Team Canada alternate Bryan McCabe (Calgary, AB/Toronto Maple Leafs) and Jay Bouwmeester (Edmonton, AB/Florida Panthers), both defencemen, have been added to Canada’s 2006 Men’s Olympic Hockey Team’s active 23-player roster, taking the place of injured defencemen Ed Jovanovski (Windsor, ON/Vancouver Canucks) and Scott Niedermayer (Cranbrook, BC/Mighty Ducks of Anaheim). Team Canada also announced that McCabe’s spot as an alternate will be taken by defenceman Dan Boyle (Ottawa, ON/Tampa Bay Lightning).
The 2006 Olympic men’s hockey competition runs from February 15-26, 2006 in Turin, Italy.
Canada’s roster is comprised of three goaltenders, seven defencemen and 13 forwards. The three alternate players are Boyle and forwards Jason Spezza and Eric Staal.
Canada’s Men’s Olympic Team will convene on and leave for Europe on the same day (Details to follow later in the week). Canada’s opening game in men’s hockey at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games will be against Italy on . The Women’s Olympic Team opens up on , also against Italy.
In the history of the Olympic Winter Games, Canada has amassed a total of 13 medals in men’s hockey: seven gold medals (1920, 1924, 1928, 1932, 1948, 1952, 2002), four silver medals (1936, 1960, 1992, 1994) and two bronze medals (1956, 1968). Active hockey players in the NHL have only been allowed to take part in the Olympic Winter Games since 1998.
