The Camrose Kodiaks of the Alberta Junior Hockey League will have an impact at the Royal Bank Cup National Junior ‘A’ Championship for the second straight year and the third time in four years.

"Three guys from our 2002-03 team are on three different teams there," said Camrose general manager/coach Boris Rybalka, assessing the National Championship May 8-16 in Grande Prairie.

"I guess we taught them well. We helped them to get there."

Veteran Mark Szott was with Camrose when the Kodiaks won the Royal Bank Cup in Flin Flon, Man., in 2001. Szott was also with the Kodiaks when they were National Silver Medallists last year in Charlottetown, P.E.I.

Goalie Jeff Pasemko and veteran Jason Fleck were with Camrose at the Charlottetown tournament.

Grande Prairie Storm general manager/coach Fran Gow sought Szott’s player transfer when he was putting together his 2003-04 roster. Szott, 21, had 28 goals and 46 points in 51 regular-season games for Grande Prairie, which won its first AJHL Championship.

Fleck tied for the Anavet Cup lead with four goals in seven games for the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League champion Kindersley Klippers, who won the Anavet Cup in the deciding game of the best-of-seven series.

Pasemko was third in the British Columbia Hockey League with a 2.73 goals against average in 1,711 minutes during the regular schedule with the Nanaimo Clippers. He had two shutouts and a 16-10-0 won-lost-tied record. Nanaimo beat Grande Prairie 4-1 in the best-of-seven Doyle Cup.

"It’s good for those teams, with some Royal Bank Cup experience there," said Rybalka. "If I was the coach of those teams, I definitely would utilize that and ask what we can expect."
