Four Edmonton Oilers Named to Team Canada's Men's Worlds Roster

RIGA, LATVIA - Team Canada General Manager Steve Tambellini announced that four Edmonton Oilers players will represent Canada at the 2003 IIHF Men's World Hockey Championship, taking place in Finland, April 26-May 11, 2003.

Tambellini, along with Team Canada Assistant GM Don Maloney (NY Rangers) and Director, Player Personnel Jim Nill (Detroit Red Wings) named the following Oilers players to Team Canada's roster.

Canada's roster now stands at 20 players – three goaltenders, four defensemen and 13 forwards. Tambellini expects to name additional players over the three days, as NHL teams are eliminated from the NHL playoffs.

Smyth and Brewer were both members of Canada's 2002 gold medal winning Men's Olympic hockey team. The 2003 World Championship will be the 5th consecutive Worlds for Smyth and the 3rd consecutive for Brewer. Comrie represented Canada at the 2002 World Championship in Sweden.

Andy Murray, Head Coach of the LA Kings, will lead Canada behind the bench as Head Coach. Mike Pelino (CHA), Barry Trotz (Nashville) and Rob Cookson (Calgary) will be Murray's assistant coaches.

Team Canada is currently training in Riga, Latvia, and will play one exhibition game vs. Latvia on Wednesday, April 23, prior to arriving in Turku, Finland on April 24th.

Canada won two gold medals in the 1990's at the World Hockey Championship - 1994 and again in 1997. Canada finished sixth last year at the Men's World Hockey Championship in Sweden.

At this year's Championship in Finland, Canada is in a preliminary round group with: Belarus, Latvia and Sweden. Canada's first game at the 2003 IIHF World Hockey Championship will take place in Turku, Finland on April 26 versus Belarus.

The official broadcaster of the CHA, TSN/RDS, will have live TV coverage of the Men's Worlds, and will be covering all of Team Canada's games, beginning with Canada's first game of the championship (April 26th vs. Belarus).
