CALGARY, AB - Forward Brendan Shanahan and defenceman Jay McKee have been added for Canada's Men's Olympic Team's Orientation Session in Calgary, AB this week, the Canadian Hockey Association announced on Monday.
Team Canada Executive Director, Wayne Gretzky, said the two players have been added to ensure the coaching staff has enough players to stage competitive on-ice sessions.
"At least two players who were previously named may not be able to skate as a result of off season surgery or minor injuries, " said Wayne Gretzky. "It was always our plan to have the option of expanding the roster from a larger group of candidates, and these two players were on our list."
Defenseman Adam Foote (shoulder surgery) and forward Joe Sakic (groin) may not be able to take part in any on-ice activities, but both will be attending the orientation session.
Shanahan, 32, is a veteran of 14 seasons in the NHL. The native of Mimico, ON and member of the NHL's Detroit Red Wings has extensive international experience, having played in the Winter Olympics (1998), the World Cup of Hockey (1996), the World Hockey Championship (1994), the Canada Cup (1991) and the World Junior Championship (1986).
McKee, 24, will be entering his sixth season with the NHL's Buffalo Sabres. The Kingston, ON native is a former 1st round pick of the Sabres, taken 14th overall. McKee last competed internationally as a 16 year old, when he captained Team Ontario at the World Under 17 Challenge.
The orientation camp roster now stands at 36 players with the additions of Shanahan and McKee.
The orientation session will be held September 4-7 at the CHA's head office in Calgary, Alberta, at the Father David Bauer Olympic Arena.
