Guy Carbonneau Named Assistant Coach for Canada at IIHF Men's World Championship; Support Staff Named

CALGARY, AB - Executive Director Wayne Gretzky, Assistant Executive Director Lanny McDonald and Head Coach Wayne Fleming announced Thursday that Guy Carbonneau has been named assistant coach of Canada's Men's World Championship team at the 2001 IIHF Men's Worlds, April 28-May 13, 2001 in Germany.

"We are very excited to announce Guy to our coaching staff, and feel that he will be an outstanding addition as we head to Germany for the World Championship, " said Lanny McDonald. Carbonneau, currently an assistant coach with the Montreal Canadiens, will join Head Coach Wayne Fleming, and assistant coach/video Mike Pelino of Canada's National team. McDonald and Fleming will name an additional assistant coach within the next ten days.

"Guy brings a winning tradition from both Montreal and Dallas, and is a welcome addition to our coaching staff," said Wayne Fleming, Head Coach of Team Canada.

" I am extremely honoured to be named as the assistant coach of Canada's World Championship team, " said Carbonneau. "Any chance you have an opportunity to represent your country, it is indeed an privilege, and I am looking forward to this opportunity." Carbonneau, from Sept-Iles, QC, retired on after playing 1318 NHL games, amassing 663 points, winning three Stanley Cup Championships (1986, 1993 - Montreal, and 1999 - Dallas). Carbonneau won the Frank J. Selke trophy three times (1988, 1989, 1992) and was runner up for the award twice.

Canada will begin naming players by end of day Thursday, and will continue to name players over the next few weeks.

Canada's first game at the 2001 IIHF World Hockey Championship will take place in Hanover, Germany on April 28 versus Norway.
