STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN -- Canada played Sweden to a 1-1 tie Wednesday in Stockholm Sweden in Canada's only exhibition game prior to the 1999 World Hockey Championship in Norway May 1-16,1999.

Rick Tabaracci, of Toronto ON, was the difference over the first 40 minutes, stopping all 25 shots directed him an experienced Swedish side. Despite being outshot, Canada opened the scoring in the second period. Adam Graves' pass in front banked in off Ray Whitney, of Ft.Saskatchewan, SK at 5:56 as Canada claimed a 1-0 lead.

This advantage lasted until 9:38 of the final frame, as Kim Johnsson put a rebound behind Fred Brathwaite, of Ottawa ON. Brathwaite replaced Tabaracci in goal at the beginning of the third period.

Canada's General Manager Bryan Murray announced during the game that defenceman Wade Redden and goaltender Ron Tugnutt of the Ottawa Senators, along with forward Ryan Smyth, of the Edmonton Oilers will join the team in the next few days.

Redden, a 21 year-old defenceman, has just completed his 3rd season with the Ottawa Senators. Redden, a native of Lloydminster SK, won gold with Canada at the 19 World Junior Championship.

Tugnutt, of Scarborough ON, was among the league's leading goaltenders over the course of the NHL season, finishing the year with a 1.79 goals against average, 1st in the league, and a .925 save percentage, 3rd in the league. Tugnutt, 31 years old, played with Canada in the 1994 World Hockey Championship in which Canada finished 4th.

Smyth, 23 years old, will be taking part in his 1st World Hockey Championship. The native of Banff AB was a member of the gold-medal winning Canadian team at the 1995 World Junior Hockey Championship. This season, with the Oilers, Smyth collected 13 goals and added 18 assists.

Team Canada heads to Norway on April 29th for the World Championship which runs from May 1st through May 16th in Hamar, Olso and Lillehammer, Norway.

Canada may still add NHL players in the next few days and have the option to make up to five roster changes until the medal round of the tournament, which begins on May 12th.

Canada opens the 1999 World Championship on Saturday, May 1 against Slovakia. The two-game gold medal final will be held May 15th and May 16th. TSN and RDS will both televise the World Hockey Championship, beginning with the second round.
