CALGARY, AB - Bryan Murray has been named general manager of Canada's 1999 National Team that will compete at the World Hockey Championship in Oslo, Norway, Canadian Hockey Association vice-president of hockey, Tom Renney announced Wednesday.

Murray is currently the vice-president and general manager of the National Hockey League's Florida Panthers. In 1996, Murray's efforts were recognized when The Sporting News selected him as NHL Executive of the Year. Prior to being with the Panther's organization, the native of Shawville, Quebec was head coach and general manager of the Detroit Red Wings from 19 and the head coach of the Washington Capitals from 19. Murray's NHL record as a coach is 484-368-123, placing him seventh on the league's all-time victory list. Murray was an assistant coach with Canada's entry at the 1990 World Championship where Canada finished fourth.

"With Bryan's expertise and knowledge of both the international game and the NHL player, we believe we have improved our ability to succeed in Norway immensely," said Tom Renney, Vice-president, Hockey at the Canadian Hockey Association. "The staff has been working on putting together a strong team from the support staff right through to the players, and Bryan certainly is a terrific addition."

Canada won the World Championship in 1997 and finished in 6th place last year. This year's World Men's Championship will be held in Oslo, Norway from May 1-16, 1999.

"I think more than anything, I am pleased to have the opportunity to contribute to the Canadian Hockey program and the challenge to win a gold medal at the World Championships, " said Bryan Murray. "It should be fun. It should be exciting. It should be very challenging and I hope we are able to recruit and select the best players that will help us compete for the title."

Current National Team Head coach and general manager Mike Johnston will serve as head coach at the World Championship with Willie Desjardins as one of his assistant coaches. The entire coaching and support staff will be confirmed later this week. Players for Canada's entry into this year's championship will begin to be named in the next few days.
