21 janvier 1999

RENFREW, ON--Canada's National Women's team defeated Team Finland 6-2 in Renfrew, ON on Thursday night after the teams played to a 6-6 tie on Wednesday. This was the second game of a four game tour of Ontario and Quebec for these two teams.

Canada's Tammy Lee Shewchuk of St. Laurent, QC scored the only goal of the first period with Cassie Campbell of Brampton, ON getting the assist. Team Finland scored a power play goal at the start of the second period, but Team Canada answered with goals from Hayley Wickenheiser of Calgary, AB, who now has five goals in the two games of the tour, and Kathy McCormack of Blackville,NB who scored at 12:41. Jayna Hefford, Geraldine Heaney scored for Canada in the third period, and Therese Brisson added an empty net goal.

Kim St-Pierre of LaSalle, QC stopped 16 of 18 of Team Finland's shots, but the story in goal was Finland's Minna Riikka Hurkainen who faced 34 of Canada's shots, and was under constant pressure from the Canadian's powerful offence. Hurkainen was named player of the game for Finland.

Anytime the other team's goalie is selected as the player of the game after we score five goals on her, it shows the depth of our offence as a team, said Daniele Sauvageau, Head coach of Team Canada.

Canada and Finland will play two more games as the eastern Canadian women's tour continues Friday night at the Maurice Richard Arena in Montreal, and Sunday afternoon in Drummondville, QC.
