WINNIPEG, MB -- A knee injury has ended the 1999 National Junior Team Summer Evaluation Camp for defenceman Bryan Allen of Glenburnie, ON, head coach George Burnett announced on Thursday.
Allen, who turns 18 on Aug. 21, suffered a Grade 1 sprain of the medial collateral ligament on his right knee in a collision Wednesday night during the first intra-squad game of the seven-day camp and, after being evaluated by team medical staff, was advised not to continue. Allen scored six goals and added 13 assists for 19 points in 48 games with the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League during the 1997-98 season. Allen, a first-round choice by the Vancouver Canucks in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, left camp on Thursday.
Earlier on Thursday forward Tyler Rennette of Powassan, ON and a member of the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League also went home. He suffered a mild concussion on Wednesday in practice
Rennette's spot on the 41-player evaluation camp roster was by Michael Henrich of the OHL's Barrie Colts. Henrich, selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the first round of the NHL's Entry Draft, scored 41 goals and added 22 assists for 63 points in Barrie in 1997-98. He arrived in camp on Thursday afternoon and played in the team's second intra-squad game on Thursday night.
The National Junior Team camp continues until Sunday, with the split Red and White squads practising Thursday, Saturday and Sunday and playing intra-squad games the same days.
The camp is the first stage in the process of assembling the team that will represent Canada at the 1999 World Junior Hockey Championship in Winnipeg and surrounding cities from Dec. 26 - Jan. 5. About 32 players will be invited to the selection camp from Dec. 12-18, with 22 players being chosen to play for Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championship.
