ANAHEIM, CA -- Team captain Mark Woolf recorded a three-goal hat-trick to power Team Canada to a 14-4 victory over Austria on Monday in the tournament-opening game for both teams at the 1998 IIHF World In-Line Hockey Championship.

Kevin Kerr, Hugo Belanger, Gerry St. Cyr, Kevin St. Jacques and Victor Gervais each scored twice for Canada, which started slowly, but relentlessly overpowered the Austrians. Andy Rymsha scored the other goal for Canada.

Canada, the silver medal-winners the past two World In-Line World Championships, is coached by Doug McCarthy, team captain of the 1997 Canadian National In-Line team.

The eight-team tournament is split into two groups, with Canada in the B pool as Switzerland, Germany and Austria. Defending champion United States is in the A pool with Russia, Finland and Italy. After the teams play single round- robin, the teams will be re-seeded and the winner of Group A facing the second-place team in Group B in one semifinal game, with the winner of Group B taking on the second-place team in Group A in the other.

The semifinal games will be played on Friday, July 24 at the Disney Ice arena, with the Bronze- and Gold-medal games to be played at the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim on Saturday, July 25 at 4:30 and 7:30 PDT, respectively. Canada plays Germany tonight (Tuesday) at 4:30 pm PDT.
