Czech Republic Edges Canada in Sweden Games Tournament Opener

STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- Milan Hejduk scored with 3:24 remaining in the game to lift the Czech Republic to a 3-2 victory over Canada's National Team on Wednesday in the opening game for both teams at the Sweden Games hockey tournament.

The five-team tournament includes Russia, Finland and the host team from Sweden and is considered one of the most important events on the European Hockey calendar.

Former University of Calgary star Evan Marble of Eston, SK, and Curtis Bowen of Kenora, ON scored for Canada, while Frantisek Kaberle and David Vyborny were the other goal scorers for the Czech Republic.

Dominic Roussel of Hull, QC, made 30 saves in goal for Canada, while Milan Hnilicka turned aside 33 shots in goal for the Czech Republic.

Roussel, who was assigned to Canada's National Team this season by the Philadelphia Flyers, will rejoin the National Hockey League at the conclusion of the Sweden Games. Roussel will remain with the Flyers for the balance of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Canada plays Russia today at the Sweden Games, takes on Finland on Friday and plays Sweden on Saturday. The top two teams after the round-robin portion of the tournament meet on Sunday, April 26 in the tournament final.
