CALGARY, AB -- Pat Quinn has been named general manager of Canada's 1998 National Team that will compete at the World Hockey Championship in Zurich, Switzerland, Canadian Hockey senior vice-president Bob Nicholson announced Wednesday.
Nicholson also announced that Ted Nolan of Sault Ste-Marie, ON and Rich Sutter of Viking, AB will serve as scouts for the 1998 World Championship team, monitoring the play of National Hockey League players who might be available to play for Canada at the championship. The Men's Team is composed of players whose teams either don't qualify for the National Hockey League playoffs, or are eliminated after the first round.
Canada is defending World Champion, having won the 1997 tournament in Helsinki, Finland. Quinn was a key part of the management group that constructed the team that brought home a second gold medal in four years for Canada. In 1994, Canada won its first World Championship gold medal since 1961. In 1995, Canada won a bronze medal and followed that with a silver medal in 1996 before winning gold again last year.
"Pat Quinn has been a strong supporter of Canadian Hockey's programs, including its high-performance programs," said Nicholson. "Pat has made a strong contribution to the 1997 Championship team and brings extraordinary experience and expertise to this role as we attempt to defend our gold medal this spring in Zurich."
Quinn will work with Team Canada head coach Andy Murray, as well as Mike Johnston, who is general manager of Canada's full-time Men's National Team, as well as associate coach with Murray on both the National Team and the World Championship team. Both Murray and Johnston coached the 1997 World Championship team and are members of the coaching staff of Canada's 1998 Men's Olympic Hockey Team, as well.
Murray said that Nolan, a former head coach with the NHL's Buffalo Sabres, and Sutter, a longtime NHL player, will be invaluable in providing performance analysis on prospective World Championship candidates.
