OSAKA, JAPAN -- Sean Selmser of Calgary scored at 13:33 of the third period to lift Canada's National Team into a 3-3 tie against the Japanese National Team in an international hockey game here Sunday.

The game was the first of a five-game series between the two teams that will see Canada play single games in Kobe (Jan. 12) and Nagoya (Jan. 14), as well as a pair of games in Tokyo (Jan. 16 and 18) before the team returns to its home base in Calgary on Jan. 19.

The Japanese built a 2-0 first-period lead on a pair of goals scored in a 12-second span. At 5:32, Takeshi Yamanaka beat Canadian goaltender Christian Bronsard of Orleans, ON and at 5:44 Kiyashi Fujita put one past Bronsard.

Team Canada cut the lead in half when team captain Brad Chartrand of Winnipeg scored at 2:41 of the second period. But the Japanese re-established the two-goal lead when Shin Yahata scored at 3:37 of the period, making it 3-1 for Japan.

At 18:21 of the middle period, Gaetan Royer of Donnacona, QC scored to slice the Japanese lead to one goal. Selmser's game-tying goal was the only score of the final period.
