CALGARY, AB -- Twenty-eight players, including all 20 members of Canada's gold medal-winning 1997 Women's World Hockey Championship team, have been invited to compete for spots on Canada's first-ever Olympic Women's Hockey Team, Canadian Hockey announced Tuesday.

The players will assemble in Calgary in September for a five-and-a-half month training block as the team gears up to play in the Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan from Feb. 7-17, 1998. The team will be based at Father David Bauer Arena and will play a series of exhibition games, as well as participate in the second annual 3 Nations Cup in Lake Placid, NY from December 12-21, as it prepares for Nagano.

The training camp roster includes four goalies, eight defencemen and 16 forwards, a list that head coach Shannon Miller will trim to two goalies and 18 skaters for the Olympics. Miller and assistant coaches Ray Bennett and Daniele Sauvageau selected the eight additional players following a series of three evaluation camps in Calgary, Toronto and Montreal in which 120 players participated.

"I think we really have a good mix of players,' said Miller. 'We have some veterans with a great deal of experience, but we also have some young, ambitious players with impressive talent. We need to have players competing hard for spots and that's what we'll have.'

The group of eight invited players who did not participate in the Women's World's in Kitchener, ON in April, includes goaltenders Manon Rhéaume, a two-time world champion for Canada (1992, 1994), and Isabelle Minier, who has played for Les Patriotes of the University of Quebec at Trois-Rivieres for the last three years. Also invited to train in Calgary were: Tammy Lee Shewchuk, Kathy McCormack, Dana Antal and Jennifer Botterill, all forwards; and defencemen Carol Scheibel and Becky Kellar.

The group of 20 returning players includes five who have played on Canada's National team for all four Women's World Championship gold medals: Judy Diduck; Geraldine Heaney; Angela James; France St-Louis; and Stacy Wilson.
