National Junior Team Downs Swiss in Pre-World Championship Game

STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- Brett McLean of Comox, BC, snapped a 2-2 tie when he scored his second goal of the game at 2:05 of the third period to lift Canada's National Junior Team to a 4-2 victory over the Swiss National Junior Team in a pre-World Junior Hockey Championship tournament game on Sunday night

Vincent Lecavalier of Ile-Bizard, QC and Jason Ward of Oshawa, ON scored the other goals for Canada, which outshot Switzerland 39-32. Roberto Luongo of Montreal played the entire game in goal for Canada, stopping 30 of the 32 shots he faced.

The National Junior Team was scheduled to conclude its pre-competition camp on Monday and travel to Helsinki, Finland where the team will compete in the 1998 World Junior Hockey Championship which runs from Dec. - Jan.. Team Canada finished the pre-competition camp with a 1-1 won-lost record, after losing its first exhibition game 4-3 to the Swedish National Junior Team on Saturday.

Canada opens the World Junior Hockey Championship on Dec. 25 against the host club, Finland, a game that will be televised live on TSN and its Quebec-based sister network, RDS.TSN and RDS will televise all of Canada's tournament games, as well as the bronze- and gold-medal games.
