KITCHENER, ON -- Alex Tanguay of the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League scored at 18:08 of the third period to lift Canada's National Junior Team hopefuls into a 3-3 tie against the Ontario University Athletic Association Western Division All-Stars in an exhibition game during the National Junior Team's Selection Camp on Monday night.

Vincent Lecavalier of the Rimouski Oceanic of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and Brett McLean of the Western Hockey League's Kelowna Rockets also scored for the National Junior Team candidates, who will play a second exhibition game tonight (Tuesday) against the OUAA Eastern Division All-Stars.

Chris Gignac of the University of Windsor, Rick Morton of Brock University and Mike Williams of York University scored for the OUAA West All-Stars. Goaltenders Mathieu Garon of the Victoriaville Tigres of the QMJHL, Patrick Desrochers of the Sarnia Sting of the OHL and Roberto Luongo of the QJMJHL's Val d'Or Foreurs shared goaltending chores for both teams.

The game is part of a six-day selection camp to choose the players who will compete for Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championship in Helsinki, Finland from Dec. 25-Jan. 3. Head coach Réal Paiement of the Moncton Wildcats of the QMJHL, and assistants Peter DeBoer of the OHL's Plymouth Whalers and Terry Bangen, along with Barry Trapp, Canadian Hockey's Director of Scouting, must trim the roster to 22 players by Wednesday, when the National Junior Team departs for Sweden. The team will hold its pre-competition camp in Stockholm from Dec. 18-23 before travelling to Helsinki for the World Junior Championship.

Team Canada will play exhibition games against Sweden (Dec. 20) and Switzerland (Dec. 21) in Stockholm, and open the 1998 World Junior Hockey Championship against Finland, the host club. The broadcast of the tournament opener will be seen on TSN and RDS, beginning at 11a.m. EST. Both TSN and RDS will broadcast all of Canada's games at the World Junior Championship, along with the bronze- and gold-medal games.
