CALGARY -- The first in a series of 10 NIKE Hockey Skills Development Camps will be held in Calgary at the Father David Bauer Arena the weekend of Dec. 20-21, Canadian Hockey announced Monday.
The two-day camps are open to boys and girls playing in the Atom and PeeWee divisions and are run by qualified Canadian Hockey Association instructors. The on- and off-ice activities have been designed to develop and enhance the fundamental skills of skating, stick handling, passing and shooting. The players also learn the concepts of fair play, sportsmanship and the importance of having fun.
The weekend camps will be held in 10 Canadian cities from Victoria, BC to Saint John, NB and will run until the end of March. The cost to attend a development camp is $50. As the Canadian Hockey Association will be able to accomodate but 72 players, participants for the camps will be selected via a random draw. Camp brochures, containing a registration form, are available to all players registered with the CHA through their coaches. Players can also obtain brochures by contacting their minor hockey association, their local branch, or Mark Best at Canadian Hockey.
"The NIKE Skills Development Camps provide an excellent opportunity for boys and girls (aged 10-13) to improve their individual skills with qualified instructors in a fun environment," said Jamie McDonald, director of development for the Canadian Hockey Association. "The combination of on- and off-ice activities will enhance the NIKE Skills Development program launched this fall and targeting coaches and players in the Atom and PeeWee categories."
The foundation of the NIKE Skills Development Program is a series of coaching manuals developed by the Canadian Hockey Association and named in honor of the late Gordon Juckes, a long-time president of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association. Through NIKE's sponsorship, 5,000 of the manuals have been donated to the CHA's 2,500 minor hockey associations.
The program for the camps includes video presentations, a team-building session, on-ice instruction as well as off-ice games. All players who attend the camps receive expert training and guidance on- and off-ice, a report card on performance with a personal program for further development; and a special kit of NIKE hockey-related apparel.
The schedule for the camps is as follows: Calgary, Dec. 20-21; Edmonton, Jan. 17-18; Winnipeg, Jan. 24-25; Victoria, Jan. 31-Feb. 1; Toronto, Feb. 7-8; Saskatoon, Feb. 14-15; Saint John, NB, Feb. 21-22; Ottawa, March 14-15; Montreal, March 21-22; Quebec City, March 28-29.
