FUSSEN, GERMANY -- Tournament roster additions Stephane Richer and Rich Chernomaz scored goals on Friday as Canada's National Men's Team defeated the Swiss National Team 4-1 in the opening game for both teams in the Deutschland Cup.
Team Canada plays Slovakia today and finishes the four-team, round-robin tournament on Sunday when they play the host German National Team.
Curtis Bowen of Kenora, ON and Brad Chartrand of Calgary also scored for Canada, which grabbed a 2-0 first-period lead and received a strong goaltending performance from Dominic Roussel of Blainville, QC. Misko Antisin scored the lone goal for Switzerland.
Richer, of Hull, QC, and Chernomaz of Selkirk, MB, were among seven players, including 1996-97 team captain Dean Evason, of Calgary, who were added to the Canadian roster for the tournament. Evason had a pair of assists in the game, helping to set up goals by Chernomaz and Chartrand.
The other call-ups for the tournament were defencemen Derek Mayer of Rossland, BC, Darren Rumble of Barrie, ON, Mike Bullard of Ottawa, Gino Cavallini of Toronto.
Evason, team captain of Canada's gold medal-winning team at the 1997 World Hockey Championship in Helsinki last spring, is playing for Landshut of the German Elite League this season, along with Cavallini. Chernomaz is playing for Schwenigan and Mayer for Eisbaren Berlin, while both Rumble and Richer are with Mannheim.
Following the Deutschland Cup, Canada's National Team will travel to France for a pair of games against the French National Team before flying back to Calgary on Nov. 13. They will then spent two weeks training at their home base at Father David Bauer Arena at the Royal Bank Canadian Hockey Centre.
