National Men's Team Splits Pair of Games in Great Britain

CALGARY -- Canada's National Men's team lost 8-6 to the Cardiff Devils of the British Super League on Thursday in the second of a pair of tune-up games Team Canada will play as it prepares for the Deutschland Cup tournament in Fussen, Germany.

On Wednesday in Basingstoke, Team Canada defeated the Basingstoke Beavers 5-0. Canada travels to Germany today (Friday), where they will play an exhibition game against the German National Team in Memingen on Nov. 5. The Deutschland Cup tournament runs Nov. 7-9.

On Thursday, Randy Perry of Spruce Grove, AB and Mickey Elick of Calgary scored twice for the National Team, while Chris Szysky of White City, Sk and Brad Chartrand of Winnipeg also scored.

Skip Noble and Vezio Sacratini scored twice for Cardiff, who got single goals from Doug McCarthy,a Canadian who was the captain of Canada's National In-Line Hockey team at the World In-Line Hockey Championship in Anaheim CA last summer, Doug McEwan, Steve Brian, and Brian Cooper. Cardiff scored three goals on the power play and scored their eighth goal into an empty Canadian net with one second remaining in the game after head coach Andy Murray pulled goaltender Christian Bronsard for a sixth attacker in the final minute of play.

In the 5-0 victory over Basingstoke, Craig MacDonald of Antigonish, NS, Chartrand, Szysky, Elick and Chris Herperger of Stockholm, SK scored for Canada. Dominik Roussel of Blainville, QC stopped 12 shots to earn the shutout.

Mike Johnston, general manager and associate coach of the National Team, said the club may bolster their lineup for the Deutschland Cup by adding some Canadians currently playing in European leagues.
