CALGARY, AB -- Goaltender Sami Jo Small of Winnipeg, MB has been added to the National Women's Team and will compete for a spot on the 20-player roster that will represent Canada at the Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan next February, head coach Shannon Miller announced Thursday.

For the last three years, Small, 21, has been the starting goalie for the men's hockey team at Stanford University, where she is studying mechanical engineering. This is Small's senior year at the Palo Alto, CA school, which she has been attending on a track and field scholarship. Small competes in discus and javelin for Stanford's track team.

The addition of Small means the women's team has five goalies in camp. The others are Danielle Dube of Vancouver, Isabelle Minier of Breakeyville, PQ, Manon Rheaume of Lac Beauport, PQ and Lesley Reddon of Fredericton, NB. It's expected that two will earn berths on the Olympic team which will compete in the first-ever women's hockey tournament at the Winter Games.

Small competed for Team Manitoba at the 1991 Canada Winter Games in Summerside, PEI, playing as a forward. Otherwise, her hockey experience has involved playing goalie on male teams, including AAA midget and Junior 'B' hockey in Winnipeg.

The addition of Small means there are 29 players at the women's training camp: five goalies; eight defenders and 16 forwards.

The National Women's Team begins its pre-Olympic schedule on Oct. 8 when it plays the Chinese National Women's Team at the Father David Bauer Arena.
