CALGARY, ALTA -- The second of three evaluation camps for Canada's National Women's Hockey Team is set to go at the Ice Gardens in North York, ON from May 2-4, Canadian Hockey announced Monday.

The first camp -- a series of final tryouts for the 1998 Women's Olympic Hockey Team -- was held at Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary last weekend, with 40 players participating. A third camp will be held at Collège Jean de Brébeuf in Montreal, from May 23-25.

Forty-two players have been invited to the North York camp, including National Team and 1997 Women's World Championship team players Cassie Campbell, Geraldine Heaney, Angela James, Laura Schuler and Vicky Sunohara.

Olympic team head coach, Shannon Miller, who led Canada to its fourth straight gold medal at the Women's World Hockey Championship in Kitchener, ON earlier this month, will coordinate the camp, with help from Karen Hughes, head coach of the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's team and national team assistant coach Daniele Sauvageau.

The camps are part of the Women's High Performance Program's ongoing player identification process, but also serve as last-chance tryouts for players who want to join the National Women's Team in Calgary in September to begin a five-month preparation process for the 1998 Winter Games in Nagano, Japan.

Between 25-30 players will be invited to train full-time with the National Women's Team in September but only 20 will be selected for the Olympic Team roster. Female hockey is a medal sport for the first time in the history of the Winter Games next February at Nagano.
