SUMMERSIDE, PEI -- Emmanuelle Cabana stopped 43 of 44 shots and Marie-Claude Allard fired in the gamewinner at 15:32 of the third period as Team Quebec edged Team Ontario 2-1 to win the first-ever Canadian Women's Midget Hockey Championship on Sunday.

Saskatchewan won the bronze medal with an upset 4-3 victory over Alberta, while New Brunswick and Manitoba finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the nine-team tournament. British Columbia was the only province that did not send a team to this championship for Under-18 women. Rounding out the standings, Newfoundland finished seventh, host club P.E.I. eighth, with Nova Scotia ninth.

In the gold-medal game, tournament Most Valuable Player Dominique Rancour opened the scoring at 12:27 of the second period with a power-play goal. Allard gave Quebec a 2-0 lead at 15:32 of the third when she took a lead pass from Rancour, sped in on a breakaway and snapped a shot over goaltender Tania Pinelli, who faced 27 shots in the Ontario goal. Kelly Sage scored the only goal for Ontario with just eight seconds remaining in the game.

Caroline Ouellette and Annie Desrosiers, both of Quebec, led all scorers in the tournament with 11 points each. Ouellette had seven goals and four assists, Desrosiers six goals and five assists. Danielle Bourgeois of Alberta, named the tournament's top offensive player, had 10 points, including six goals, while teammate Correne Bredin had 10 points -- two goals and eight assists.

Other individual award winners included: Gillian Ferrari of Team Ontario, named the top defensive player; Terry Turner of Alberta, top goalie; and Nicole Knittig, of Team Saskatchewan, who took honors as Most Sportspersonlike. All the individual awards were decided from round-robin play.
