Ottawa (Ontario) - Canadian Hockey announced today that the top three teams in womens' ice hockey will participate in the Three Nations' Cup tournament. The womens teams from Canada, the United States and Finland will face off from October 20-27 in games being held in Ottawa, Kingston, Cornwall, Smith Falls and Canton, New York.

The tournament will feature a round-robin format with a championship final game to be aired live on CBC television.

Competition will open with the Canada - Finland contest at 7 pm on Sunday, October 20. Play will continue each evening through to Friday, October 25. The final game will begin at 3 pm on Sunday, at the Ottawa Civic Centre. Please see attached schedule.

Local Host Committees are excited about this rare opportunity to stage an international women's ice hockey tournament and are planning special events including autograph sessions to accompany the games.

The 3 Nations' Cup gives these top three countries a chance to take each other's measure just prior to the 1997 Women's World Championship slated for March 31-April 6 in Kitchener, Ontario. The top five contries plus Japan from this event advance to the 1998 Winter Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan.

In total, 33 players from across Canada will be invited to attend the training camp prior to the tournament. All 20 members of the 1996 Women's Pacific Championship team are returning, lead by 1990 veterans Judy Diduck, Angela James, Geraldine Heaney, France St. Louis, Stacy Wilson. Players with two world championships to their credit will also be present including: Manon Rheaume, Nancy Drolet, Danielle Goyette, Karen Nystromand and Laura Schuler. As they look to Nagano and even the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Canada is conscious of developing the next wave of national team players and this group is well represented by Cassie Campbell, Leslie Reddon, Laura Leslie, and Hayley Wickenheiser all with World Championship experience and participants in international competitions since 1991.

The date for the training camp is set for and will continue until the start of the tournament on .
