Pelino Joins National Junior Hockey Team
22 juillet 1996

OTTAWA - Canadian Hockey announced today that Mike Pelino of Brock University, and Canada's 1996 national under-18 head coach, has joined the 1997 national junior team coaching staff.

Pelino replaces Terry Bangen, who joined the Vancouver Canucks coaching staff last week.

Pelino will be reunited with national junior team head coach Mike Babcock of the Spokane Chiefs. Both served as assistant coaches with the Canadian national under-18 team in 1995.

"Congratulations to Terry (Bangen) who now joins former national team coach Tom Renney," said Bob Nicholson, Canadian Hockey's senior vice-president, hockey operations. "Terry has coached through several levels of our national teams program and will make the leap to the National Hockey League."

Nicholson added that Pelino's appointment as national junior team assistant coach shows the program's continuity.

"Terry graduated through our under-18 program to the national junior team last, winning gold last year in Boston, just as Mike (Pelino) is doing now with his move to the junior team," added Nicholson. "Mike brings outstanding technical and leadership skills that will only strengthen our coaching staff for the 1997 World Junior Championship."

Pelino will work with the national junior team through its summer evaluation camp from August 2-8 in Calgary, and then lead the national under-18 team to the 1996 Air Canada Pacific Cup.
