TORONTO - Canadian Hockey announced today the Canadian roster for the 1996 World Championship being held in Vienna, Austria from April 21 to .
General manager Pierre Gauthier and the Canadian team coaching staff, made up of head coach Tom Renney, and assistant coaches Mike Johnston, Andy Murray and Rob Cookson, selected three goalkeepers, seven defenceman and 12 forwards, with another forward to be named.
The squad is made up of 19 National Hockey League players and three from Canada's 1995-96 national team program. All nine teams eliminated from the 1995-96 NHL playoffs have contributed to Canada's efforts at improving its bronze medal finish at the 1995 championship held in Sweden.
The Edmonton Oilers have contributed the most, sending four players to represent Canada.
Canada will have in goals two goalkeepers and one forward who were named yesterday by Canadian Hockey to the World Cup roster. The goalkeepers are Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils and Curtis Joseph of the Edmonton Oilers, while Paul Kariya of the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim will spark the Canadian offence in Vienna.
On the international stage, all but two players, Brodeur and Joseph, have donned Canada's maple leaf in either a World Junior, World Senior or Olympic Games, and five players were on the 1994 Canadian team that won the country's first gold medal in 31 years at the World Senior Championship.
The Canadian squad travels Tuesday afternoon to Ceske Budejovice in the Czech Republic for a pre-competition camp, which will include an exhibition game against the Czechs on April 18.
The team will then head into Vienna on April 20 for the World Championship and their opening game against Slovakia on April 21.
Canada is in group A along with Austria, Germany, Russia, Slovakia and the United States, while group B includes the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Italy, Norway and Sweden.
