by Sarah Forgrave

OTTAWA, Ont. – Kicking off the first game in Pool A at SBP Arena for the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship, Finland faced Switzerland in an afternoon game Tuesday that saw the Swiss fall to 2-1 to the Finns in front of more than 3,300 fans.

Despite the loss, Switzerland netminder Florence Schelling was a true “moment” maker between the posts.

Despite a sluggish start, Switzerland scored on its first shot on net at 4:37 in the first period, when assistant captain Katrin Nabholz capitalized on a pass by teammate Stefanie Marty.

The second period brought a different Finnish team to the ice as the stalwart defenders limited Swiss chances to only one shot on goal. Penalties proved to be costly to Switzerland, as both goals against were scored on the power play.

Outshooting Switzerland 42-16 by the end of the game, the last two periods were dominated by Finland.

But the outstanding play of the Schelling held the Finnish team to only two goals, which would prove to be the only goals on the netminder.

Schelling, for her part made multiple saves in succession, but the Swiss team was unable to score again.
