Team Summary/Sommaire d'Équipe

Did you know?

…that in the 1980s, the Schweitzer Cup became the Stanley Cup for women’s hockey in Switzerland

The Swiss qualified for a trip to Halifax by winning the 2002 Division I section of the World Championships. They had played most recently at the 1999 World Women’s Championship, but this year they arrive with an experienced head coach and a roster full of youth. That head coach is none other than Diane Michaud, who won gold as a player with Canada at the 1990 and 1992 world championships. She was head coach for Team Quebec at the 1995 Canada Winter Games and has been head of the Swiss program since 2001. Michaud will rely first and most heavily on her last line of defence—her goalies. Patricia Sautter and Riitta Schaeublin both play in the USA. The third goalie is 15-year-old Florence Schelling who is currently playing with a boys team in Switzerland. The defence is headed by two veterans, Mirjam Baechler and Monika Leuenberger, who have played 130 and 132 international games, respectively, for La Suisse. Beyond that pair, though, is a bevy of inexperienced blueliners, notably Sabrina Arnet, Nicole Bullo, Elisabeth Ingold, Julia Marty, and Christine Meier. The forwards are led by 31-year-old Ruth Kunzle, a fine two-way player. Noted for scoring are Jeanette Marty and Daniela Diaz, and Sandrine Ray might be the most exciting player on the team with her speed and skill. Rachel Rochat plays in Chesapeake Bay, USA during the season and Kathrin Lehmann is not only a forward with this team but also a goalie with the Swiss National Women’s Football (soccer) Team. The rest of the forwards include Silvia Bruggmann, Sandra Cattaneo, Ramona Fuhrer, Melanie Hafliger, Stephanie Marty, Tina Schumacher, Anita Steinmann, and Nicky Walder.
