Team Summary/Sommaire d'Équipe

Did you know?

…that Gunther Sabetzki, former president of the IIHF, formed Germany’s first women’s hockey league in 1982 in North-Rhine Westfalia

The Germans placed sixth at the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City following a 5-0 loss to Russia in the placement games section of that pre-eminent tournament. This past season they played the Swiss four times in exhibition games, winning one, losing one, and tying two. The lineup in Halifax will be remarkably similar to the Olympic roster, which could mean either another middle-of-the-pack performance (because of stagnation) or a superior result (because of experience and development). As is so often the case, the Germans will rely on their goalie, Stephanie Wartosch-Kuerten, who was their best player at Salt Lake City. Her backup will be 24-year-old Esther Thyssen, and of the seven defencemen for Germany at this year’s Worlds, six played in 2002. The only newcomer is Thyssen’s sister, Rachel. Up front, the Germans will be bringing seven regulars from the Olympics, led by Michaela Lanzl, but they will be without their top scorer from that tournament, Maritta Becker. They have two players who are playing hockey in Canada—Raffaela Wolf (Oakville Ice) and rookie Denise Soesilo (Calgary). Other returning forwards include Bettina Evers, Nina Ritter, Anja Scheytt, Julia Wierscher, and Claudia Grundmann. Joining Soesilo as newcomers to international competition are Nina Gall, Susann Goetz, and Franziska Busch.
