CANADA CAN’T COMPLETE COMEBACK AGAINST VITOS

MONCTON, NB – Canada’s National Women’s Team made it close but couldn’t tie the score late and ended up dropping a 3-2 decision to the Saint John Vitos Midget AAA boys team on Friday night.

The game was the first of four for the National Women’s Team at the October training camp, which is being held through Monday, October 13.

Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, QC/Dawson College, CEGEP) opened the game’s scoring with the prettiest goal of the night. Following a scoreless first period, Poulin finished off a great play with Caroline Ouellette (Montreal, QC/Montreal, CWHL) and Noémie Marin (Acton-Vale, QC/Montreal, CWHL) at 2:31 of the second to make it 1-0. Poulin took the Marin pass and snapped a shot over the shoulder of Saint John goaltender Matthew Murphy.

Kim St-Pierre (Chateauguay, QC/Montreal, CWHL) started in goal for Canada, with Laura Hosier (Sharon, ON/Brampton, CWHL) coming in to replace her at the 11-minute mark of the second. Saint John also switched goaltenders at that point, with Matthew Auger taking over.

Canada led 1-0 after 40 minutes and still held that lead with under seven minutes left in the game. But that’s when Saint John exploded for three unanswered goals, with Mike Richard, Andrew Langan and Josh Carter all scoring to make it 3-1 for the Vitos.

With Canada on a power play, Hosier left the ice to give her team the extra attacker and a 6-on-4 advantage. It worked, as Gina Kingsbury (Rouyn-Noranda, QC/Calgary, WWHL) tipped in a point shot from Gillian Ferrari (Thornhill, ON/Calgary, WWHL) at 19:12, which cut Saint John’s lead to one. Becky Kellar (Hagersville, ON/Burlington, CWHL) also got an assist on the goal.

That was as close as Canada would get, as the Vitos held on for the win.

Canada returns to action on Saturday night (7:30 p.m. AST) against the Fredericton Canadiens, a game that will be held at the Kay Arena in Moncton.
