CANADA EDGES RUSSIA, IMPROVES TO 2-0 AT SLEDGE WORLDS
GOYANG, South Korea – Canada’s National Sledge Team improved to 2-0 in preliminary round play at the 2013 IPC Sledge Hockey World Championship after a 4-3 victory over Russia on Sunday.
The Canadians jumped out to a 4-0 lead by the 14:37 mark of the first period before holding off a late Russian rally to take sole possession of first place in Group B.
Brad Bowden (Orton, Ont.) scored twice and added an assist to pace the offence, giving him seven points in two games, while Billy Bridges (Summerside, P.E.I.) and Greg Westlake (Oakville, Ont.) had a goal and two assists apiece.
Benoit St-Amand (St-Hubert, Que.) made seven saves to earn the victory in goal as Canada outshot Russia 25-10.
Although Canada and Russia have one of international hockey's most storied rivalries, Sunday's game was the first between the two in sledge hockey.
Canada will wrap up the preliminary round with a game against the host Koreans on Tuesday (1 a.m. ET).
