DAVOS, Switzerland – Jamie Wright (Kitchener, ON/Servette, SUI) scored Canada’s first and last goals to lead his team to a 6-3 victory over HC Davos on Wednesday at the Spengler Cup.

Team Canada fell behind 2-0 to Davos before Wright scored his first of the game. And Canada scored the next four goals, as Stacy Roest (Lethbridge, AB/Rapperswil, SUI), Krys Kolanos (Calgary, AB/Langnau, SUI), Kirby Law (McCreary, MB/Servette, SUI) and Chris Herperger (Esterhazy, SK/Kloten, SUI) all found the back of the net. Wright capped Canada’s scoring with his second of the game.

Jason Strudwick (Edmonton, AB/Lugano, SUI) chipped in with two assists.

Justin Pogge (Penticton, BC/Toronto, AHL) earned his second straight win in net, having also helped Canada defeate Mora IK (Sweden) 4-3 in a shootout on Tuesday.

Canada is 2-0 and will have Thursday off before hitting the ice on Friday for a game against Khimik (Russia). On Saturday, Canada plays EHC Eisbaren Berlin.

The Spengler Cup, a tournament that dates back to 1923, follows a round-robin format. Each of the five teams plays four round-robin games, with the top two teams meeting in the final, which is scheduled for Sunday.

Canada defeats host team Davos 6 - 3 in Spengler Cup action.
Team Canada's specialty teams were the difference in the game.  They went 2 for 8 on the power play and they only allowed 1 goal on 7 power play attempts by Team Davos.  The experience of veterans Stacy Roest and Tyler Wright gave Team Canada the edge.

The win catapulted Team Canada into first place as they now have 4 points with a 2-0 record after beating both Mora and Davos.  Justin Pogge let in 2 early goals but stormed backed after that to stop 21 of 22 shots to record the win.  His teammates were able to score 4 unanswered goals as they took a 4-2 lead in the second period on goals from Jamie Wright, Stacy Roest, Krys Kolanos and Kirby Law.  Chris Herperger also scored and Jamie Wright scored his second of the game late in the third to cap off the 6-3 victory.

Stacy Roest was named the star of the game for Canada as he had a goal and an assist.  Team Canada outshot Team Davos 27-23.

Canada will have the day off on Thursday and resume play on Friday at 3pm local time against Khimik, the Russian entry in this tournament.
