2004 IIHF World Junior Championship

Canada 3 Sweden 2

Exhibition Game
December 21, 2003
Marsta, Sweden

Despite outshooting their opponents 20-9 and a decided advantage in play in the first period, Canada couldn’t solve Joakim Lundstrom in the Swedish net, as the Swedish netminder was called upon to make some outstanding saves, notably during an early power play for Canada. The best chance for the side in Red and White came moments later, as Brent Burns one-timed a pass in front but Lundstrom kicked out his right pad to make the save.

Canada finally got onto the scoreboard in the second period, as Shawn Belle’s wrist shot from the point handcuffed Lundstrom. Sweden had an outstanding chance two minutes later, as Thomas Skogs got in all alone but couldn’t beat Marc-André Fleury.

Sweden evened the score at 1-1 in the opening minutes of the third period as Loui Eriksson got behind the defence and slid the puck under Fleury. But Canada had the lead back less than a minute. Tenacious forechecking led to a Jeff Carter goal.

Sweden wouldn’t say ‘Die’ and fought back to tie the game at 2-2 late in the game, at the 16:37 mark, as Sebastien Meijer got the puck past Fleury. But Canada continued to demonstrate its resiliency, as a great shift ended as Nigel Dawes scored at 18:02, on an assist by Michael Richards. Canada held on for hard fought 3-2 win. Canada outshot Sweden 41-33 enroute to the victory.
