CALGARY, Alta. – Hockey Canada announced Tuesday the 24 players who will represent Canada at the 2014 Spengler Cup, Dec. 26-31 in Davos, Switzerland. The roster is comprised of Canadian players currently playing in Europe, as well as players currently playing in the American Hockey League loaned to Hockey Canada by NHL teams.

The roster was assembled by Canada’s National Men’s Team management group, led by Steve Tambellini and also including Craig Heisinger and Scott White, along with head coach Guy Boucher, assistant coach Serge Pelletier, and Shawn Bullock, Hockey Canada’s senior manager of hockey operations and men’s national teams.

“The Spengler Cup is always one of the most anticipated events on the international hockey calendar for Hockey Canada, and we’re excited these 24 players will wear the maple leaf later this month in Davos,” said Scott Salmond, vice-president of hockey operations and national teams with Hockey Canada. “The players we have selected are ambassadors for the Canadian game in North America and Europe, and we’re confident they will represent their country with pride and honour.”

Canada’s roster includes eight players who were part of Team Canada at last year’s Spengler Cup (Micki DuPont, Colby Genoway, Alexandre Giroux, Joel Kwiatkowski, Brett McLean, Byron Ritchie, Jim Vandermeer and Derrick Walser), and five who played for Canada’s National Junior Team at the IIHF World Junior Championship (Chris DiDomenico, Curtis Hamilton, Steve McCarthy, Ryan Parent and Jeff Tambellini).

This year’s Spengler Cup will include Canada’s National Men’s Team, KHL Medvescak Zagreb (CRO) and HC Davos (Switzerland), the host team, playing in the Cattini Group, and HC Genève-Servette (Switzerland), Jokerit Helsinki (FIN) and Salavat Yulaev Ufa (RUS) in the Torriani Group.

Canada opens the tournament Dec. 26 against HC Davos at 2:15 p.m. ET/11:15 a.m. PT. Every game at the 2014 Spengler Cup will be broadcast on TSN or TSN2. Check your local listings for broadcast times.

Canada has appeared in 10 of the last 13 championship games, winning the Spengler Cup in 2002, 2003, 2007 and 2012. Overall, Canada’s National Men’s Team has won the Spengler Cup 12 times (1984, 1986, 1987, 1992, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2002, 2003, 2007, 2012) since first taking part in the tournament in 1984.

The Spengler Cup, held annually since 1923, is the oldest professional international hockey tournament in the world.
