Just two days before the chase for gold begins in Kindersley, Sask., five of the six teams competing at the 2014 World Junior A Challenge saw their first game action Friday night, with three pre-tournament games on the schedule.

RUSSIA 5, CANADA EAST 2

UNITY, Sask. – Denis Guryanov and Nikolai Chebykin had a goal and an assist each to lead Russia past Canada East in pre-tournament action at the Unity Community Centre.

Dmitri Zhukenov, Andrei Bannikov and Roman Ivashov also scored for the Russians, who opened the scoring just 1:35 in, and chased Canadian netminder Adrian Clark (Toronto, Ont./Carleton Place, CCHL) after one period.

Ryan Kuffner (Ottawa, Ont./Gloucester, CCHL) and Alex Tonge (Kingston, Ont./Kingston, OJHL) had the goals for Canada East, which lost despite outshooting the Russians 33-23.

After Kuffner got the Canadians within a goal just past the 12-minute mark of the first period, Chebykin restored the two-goal lead late in the opening frame, sneaking a shot under the arm of Clark for the game-winner, and Guryanov’s shorthanded effort at 16:44 of the second added even more insurance.

Blade Mann-Dixon allowed two goals on 14 shots in 40 minutes of work, while Anton Krasotkin went the distance between the pipes for the Russians, finishing with 31 saves.

UNITED STATES 6, CANADA WEST 3

ESTON, Sask. – Brock Boeser’s hat trick was the difference for the United States, which outlasted Canada West in a pre-tournament match-up at the Eston Community Complex.

Kyle Connor, Andrew Oglevie – two of the three returning Americans from last year’s gold medal-winning team – and Tyler Sheehy had the other goals for the U.S., which outshot the Canadians 42-31 in an offensively-charged game.

Ryley Risling (Medicine Hat, Alta./Canmore, AJHL), Connor Hobbs (Saskatoon, Sask./Nipawin, SJHL) and Cody Young (Saskatoon, Sask./Kindersley, SJHL) scored the goals for  Canada West, which got to within one early in the third period before Boeser finished his hat trick to give the U.S. some breathing room.

Special teams were key; the Americans connected four times with the power play, including all three of Boeser’s goals, while Risling’s goal for the Canadians came shorthanded.

Tommy Nixon  (Sherwood Park, Alta./Sherwood Park, AJHL) got the start for Canada West, making 22 saves on 25 chances before giving way to Evan Weninger (Saskatoon, Sask./Kindersley, SJHL), who stopped 14 of 17. Eric Schierhorn (10 saves, 11 shots) and Cale Morris (18 saves, 20 shots) shared the goaltending duties for the Americans.

DENMARK 6, ROSETOWN REDWINGS 0

ROSETOWN, Sask. – Emil Rasmussen scored twice to get the offence going, and Denmark added four goals in the third period to run away from the Rosetown Redwings (Senior AAA) at the SaskCan Centre.

Marcus Nielsen, Mads Eller, Daniel Hansen and Nick Olesen had goals in the final period for the Danes, who got shutout goaltending from George Sorenson in a penalty-filled contest.

Rasmussen scored in the first minute of the second period, and again with just over three minutes to go in the middle frame to give Denmark more than enough offence.

Nielsen scored unassisted just six seconds into the third period and Eller made it 4-0 just 1:46 later to officially put the game out of reach, and two more goals in the latter half of the final frame provided the final margin of victory for the Danes.
