Another year, another Nova Scotia Female Midget AAA Hockey League championship for Metro Boston Pizza.
For the fourth time in as many seasons, Metro was crowned NSFMAAAHL champions on Friday night, completing a three-game sweep of the East Hants Penguins with a 4-0 road victory.
Metro took the first two games on home ice, winning 4-2 and 3-1 on March 11 and March 16, respectively, to put itself on the verge of a fourth consecutive trip to the Atlantic Regional.
“The Penguins played us tough all year,” Metro head coach Wayne Normore told the Halifax Chronicle-Herald following the Game 3 win. “Every game we had with them was a battle and today was no different. I was impressed our girls came out and matched (the Penguins) intensity and I was very pleased with their effort.”
Metro will be on the ice in Bathurst, N.B., from March 29 to April 1, looking to do something it hasn’t done in three previous Atlantic Regional appearances – advance to the Esso Cup, Canada’s National Female Midget Championship.
It lost in the championship game to the Northern Stars in 2009 and Moncton Rockets in 2010, and missed out on a spot in the final last year on a tiebreaker.
Metro put together one of the most impressive seasons in Canadian female Midget AAA hockey in 2011-12, going a perfect 24-0 in the regular season and outscoring the opposition 155-26 before rolling through Cape Breton and East Hants with six consecutive playoff victories.
In the league final, Metro used three third-period goals to erase an East Hants lead to take Game 1, opened up a 3-0 advantage in Game 2 en route to victory and closed out the Penguins in Game 3 thanks to a shutout performance by goaltender Rebecca Weagle.
Breanna Lanceleve led the way offensively with seven points (4G, 3A) in three games, while Laura Polak (2G, 3A) and Amanda Volcko (1G, 4A) pitched in with five points apiece.
