WINNIPEG, Man. – After posting semifinal wins on Monday, Ontario and the United States will meet for the gold medal at the 2011 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge on Tuesday night at the MTS Centre. The gold medal game can be seen on TSN/RDS, the official broadcasters of Hockey Canada, at 11:30 p.m. ET/8:30 p.m. PT.

Sean Monahan was the overtime hero in the late semifinal, scoring his second goal of the game 1:52 into overtime to move Ontario into the gold medal game for the fourth consecutive year following a 2-1 victory over Quebec. Goaltender Daniel Altshuller, named a tournament all-star on Sunday following preliminary round play, made 24 saves to record the victory.

Overtime was also necessary in the early game, with Nicolas Kerdiles – like Altshuller a tournament all-star – providing the heroics at the 7:24 mark of the extra frame to keep U.S. hopes alive for back-to-back gold medals with a 6-5 win over Pacific. Kerdiles, Jacob Trouba and Matt Grzelcyk finished with a goal and assist each for the Americans, which needed overtime to win their semifinal for the second year in a row. Grzelcyk’s goal gave the U.S. a 5-1 lead before Pacific rallied to force the extra period.

Tuesday’s game will mark the second year in a row, and third time in four years, that Ontario and the United States will meet for the gold medal. Each team has beaten the other once – Ontario blanked the U.S. 2- in London, Ont., while the Americans topped Ontario 2-1 last year in Timmins, Ont. Ontario is looking for its eighth U17 gold medal, having won previously in 1992, 1995, 1997, 1998, 2004, 20. The U.S. is looking for gold No. 4, having won back-to-back titles in 20 to go along with last year’s gold.

In Tuesday’s bronze medal game at the MTS Centre (3 p.m. ET/12 p.m. PT), Pacific will face Quebec. The bronze medal game can be seen live via webcast through FASTHockey at hockeycanada.fasthockey.com.

5th Place – Atlantic 2, West 1 (in Portage la Prairie)
7th Place – Finland 5, Czech Republic 4 (at MTS Iceplex in Winnipeg)
9th Place – Germany 8, Slovakia 5 (in Portage la Prairie)
