2011 PACIFIC REGION CHAMPIONS: The Edmonton Thunder win the 2011 Pacific Female Midget Championship and advance to the 2011 Esso Cup.
HOW EDMONTON EARNED ITS SPOT AT THE ESSO CUP
PACIFIC REGION CHAMPIONS – EDMONTON THUNDER
The Edmonton Thunder once again rolled through the Pacific Female Midget Championship, beating the Thompson-Okanagan Rockets in two straight games on the weekend of April 1-2 at Castledowns Arena in Edmonton, Alta., to win a best-of-three series 2-0 and earn their triumphant return to the Esso Cup. This year the Thunder will become the only team in Esso Cup history to appear at the national championship for three straight years, and when they step onto the ice in St. Albert will have in fact appeared at every Esso Cup since the tournament’s inception. But in 2009 in Calgary, Alta., the heavily favoured upper Albertan team only finished in fourth place, while last year in Regina, Sask., the Thunder moved up a notch and managed a bronze medal after beating the Regina Rebels 5-1. Edmonton hopes to top that accomplishment this year in St. Albert, Alta., by skipping the silver medal and going straight for the gold with a local crowd cheering them on. Will the Edmonton Thunder be able to make their third time at the Esso Cup a charm – a golden charm, at that? Find out for yourself by snapping up tickets to Canada’s National Female Midget Championship, taking place at Servus Place in St. Albert, or by following all the 2011 Esso Cup action at HockeyCanada.ca./EssoCup.
