SASKATCHEWAN CHAMPIONS – NOTRE DAME HOUNDS
The Notre Dame Hounds are hungry for gold and they’re not going to be full until they’ve devoured all the competition en route to the gold medal at the 2011 Esso Cup. That’s because the Hounds settled for silver last year, their inaugural appearance at Canada’s National Female Midget Championship, suffering a tough 4-3 loss to reigning champions the Thunder Bay Queens after a game-winning power play goal midway through the third period of the tournament’s final game. But first the Hounds will have to face off against the Pembina Valley Hawks, who they edged out in the 2010 Western Female Midget Championship, in a tough three-game battle for regional bragging rights. The Hawks, however, will be just as determined to knock their regional rivals down a notch to become the western representative at the 2011 Esso Cup, especially after being elbowed out of a chance to compete at the national level with 4-3 and 3-2 losses to the Hounds last season. Notre Dame looks to defend its western title, and Pembina Valley hopes to steal it away, in this weekend’s best-of-three regional rematch at Morden Recreation Centre in Morden, Man.
