NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR CHAMPIONS – TRI-PEN FEMALE MIDGET AAA

For the first time since the provincial championship’s inception four years ago, the Tri-Pen Female Midget AAA hockey team came out on top in the Newfoundland and Labrador Female Midget qualifier, held earlier this year in Springdale, N.L. The win earns the team based out of Whitbourne, N.L., a spot in the 2011 Atlantic Female Midget Championship, taking place March 31-April 3 in Montague, P.E.I., where the regional representative for the 2011 Esso Cup will be determined. The Tri-Pen victory at the provincial qualifier was a major upset, particularly to the heavily favoured Eastern team, which went undefeated in round robin and semifinal action and was edged out 3-2 in the championship game. Eastern won the inaugural provincial qualifier, while Western won the previous two seasons. The qualifier features the best young female players in the province between the ages of 15 and 17 years old, but most of the players on the Tri-Pen team are just 15 years old. According to local newspaper The Compass, there are only two 17-year-olds and three 16-year-olds on the squad.
