The four Edmonton-area teams in the Alberta Midget Hockey League will take part in a doubleheader on Saturday, November 13 to raise funds for the Matt Cook Foundation.
Cook, a member of Canada’s National Sledge Team and an Edmonton native, lost his battle with cancer on April 4 at the age of 22. Before his passing, Cook established the Matt Cook Foundation, which raises funds to fight rare cancers.
Teams from the Canadian Athletic Club (CAC), Knights of Columbus, Maple Leaf Athletic Club (MLAC) and South Side Athletic Club (SSAC) will face each other at Bill Hunter Arena in Edmonton. The CAC – for whom Cook played his Midget hockey – will take on the SSAC at 5:45 p.m., while the Knights of Columbus will face the MLAC at 8:15 p.m.
A $20 ticket provides admission to both games and can be purchased from the Hockey Edmonton office at 780-413-3498, or through any of the four participating teams. During the evening there will be a 50/50 draw and a silent auction, as well as a number of door prizes.
In addition, there will be a sledge hockey demonstration between the two games by members of Hockey Alberta’s sledge hockey program.
An able-bodied player with the Bonnyville Pontiacs of the Alberta Junior Hockey League, Cook was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in January 2006, and had his left leg amputated below the knee in May of that year. By the fall of 2008 he had earned a spot on the roster of Canada’s National Sledge Team, recording one goal and five assists in 19 career games.
While he was a determined hockey player, Cook was also committed to community service and to encouraging other people to achieve their dreams. He worked with the Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Coalition of Amputees and a youth version of the Stanford Chronic Disease Self-Management Program, and was honorary chair for the 2008 Edmonton Relay for Life and the inaugural Face Off Against Cancer tournament in 2009.
