OTTAWA, Ont. - Hockey Canada and the Ottawa Senators announced today that the nation's capital would play host to the eighth annual Hockey Canada Foundation gala and golf tournament on Monday, June 27, and Tuesday, June 28. The event will provide a Rink of Dreams legacy fund to build a refrigerated outdoor community rink in Ottawa.
The foundation’s annual gala and golf tournament celebrates the on-ice accomplishments of Hockey Canada’s national teams at world championships and Olympic Games.
“Hockey Canada is very excited about coming back to Ottawa for our foundation’s gala and golf tournament in June 2011,” said Bob Nicholson, president and CEO of Hockey Canada. “We look forward to this tremendous event and to raising funds for a rink project through the Sens Foundation.”
“With this gala and golf tournament, Hockey Canada and its foundation have given our community a special opportunity to recognize the children who grow up playing hockey outdoors and those who will represent us on the world stage,” said Jim Durrell, event chairman. “The Rink of Dreams legacy will allow us to build the first of what we hope are many more refrigerated outdoor skating facilities, allowing for greater opportunities for the kids in our neighbourhoods.”
“We are excited about this opportunity to work with Hockey Canada and the local committee on this initiative and we look forward to seeing the Rink of Dreams project through to its conclusion for the benefit of everyone in Hockey Country,” said Danielle Robinson, president of the Sens Foundation.
“The Hockey Canada Foundation gala is an exciting opportunity to showcase our city,” said Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson. “The people of Ottawa always shine when given the opportunity to support an important cause like amateur sport, and the legacy fund will provide a lasting benefit to our community.”
The 2011 gala, which includes unique silent and live auctions, will be held at the new Ottawa Convention Centre on Monday, June 27. TSN’s Pierre McGuire and Gord Miller will serve as the masters of ceremony.
The Marshes Golf Club and Eagle Creek Golf Course will play host to the celebrity tournament on Tuesday, June 28. Each foursome will include a celebrity.
Funds raised from the 2011 gala and golf tournament will go to Hockey Canada Foundation initiatives that support everything from grassroots hockey to Olympics teams, as well as the refrigerated outdoor public skating facility in Ottawa. The committee will work with the City of Ottawa and community to determine the location of the rink, which will operate annually from mid-November to the end of March. The project will be a partnership between the Hockey Canada Foundation, the Sens Foundation and the City of Ottawa.
The 2011 gala organizing committee is composed of representatives from the Senators to community and business leaders such as Bernie Ashe, Sylvie Bigras, Brian Bockstael, Jonathan Bodden, Tony Dunn, John Jarvis, Geoff Moore, Peter O’Leary, Jim Orban Sr., Dave Ready, Michael Runia and Nathan Smith.
Last year’s gala took place in Edmonton and celebrated Canada’s success at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, where the men’s and women’s teams won gold medals, and Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team that won gold at the 2010 IIHF World Women’s Under-18 Championship. In 2009, the Canadiens’ 100th anniversary served as the backdrop of the event in Montreal, while again recognizing Canada’s gold medalists at the 2009 IIHF World Junior Championship.
The Hockey Canada Foundation has held an annual gala and golf event since 2004, raising funds for the foundation and for local initiatives while recognizing championship teams and alumni. Past events have been hosted in Toronto (2004, 2005, 2006), Calgary (2007, 2008), Montreal (2009) and Edmonton (2010).
The Hockey Canada Foundation works closely with Hockey Canada to raise money to support minor hockey programs. The foundation focuses on five areas of funding: skill development and qualified coaching; accessibility and diversity; health and wellness; athlete and alumni support; and next-generation programming.
