OTTAWA – As National Volunteer Week gets underway across the country from April 27 to May 3, the host organizing committee for the 2009 IIHF World Junior Championship in Ottawa has officially begun its recruitment campaign for the event’s most important team – the 1,400 volunteers required to present the best ever world championship to the 10 competing countries, 220 players, 100 team staff, and the record number of fans -- over 460,000 -- expected to watch the tournament’s games.

With fewer than 240 days before the opening games on Friday, Dec. 26, the host organizing committee already has over 1,200 registered volunteers and will require 200 more for the 10-day, 31-game world championship.

“The vast majority of our volunteers will be put into action from Dec. 20, six days before the championship starts, to Jan. 6, the day after the bronze and gold-medal games,” said Jim Kyte, co-director of the host committee’s volunteer division. “Over the next few months, we will begin the process of categorizing the volunteers into their areas of interest. We have hundreds of exciting opportunities in each division with varying roles and responsibilities.”

“We are looking for energetic and enthusiastic people to join our team and to ‘Share your time with the world’,” added Barb Tiffin, co-director of the volunteer division. “Volunteers must be 16 years old as of their first assigned shift of the championship, and we’ll need them to work a minimum of 30 hours throughout the championship, with most shifts lasting six hours.”

Volunteers must speak either English or French, but knowledge of Czech, Finnish, German, Latvian, Slovak, Swedish and Russian languages are also assets. All volunteers must obtain a police record check for service with the vulnerable sector by the Ottawa Police Service or from their local jurisdiction as part of the volunteer screening process.

The host organizing committee has eight divisions: administration and finance, communications, hospitality and protocol, logistics, marketing and sales, special events, venue operations, and volunteers. Each division requires volunteers to help with accreditation, communications and media services, information services, interpreters, hospitality and protocol, security, special events, technology support, team services, transportation, medical service, volunteer support, accommodations, finance and administrative support.
